The Lost Wild Reemerges at State of Play as a Tense Dinosaur Survival Horror Experience

The Lost Wild is back! Annapurna Interactive re-emerges at State of Play with an intense dinosaur survival horror experience coming to PS5 and PC.

Four years after its initial reveal left prehistoric fiction fans breathless, The Lost Wild made a triumphant return during Sony’s June 2, 2026 State of Play presentation. Developed by Brighton-based indie studio Great Ape Games and published by indie powerhouse Annapurna Interactive, the highly anticipated title had been virtually silent since 2022, prompting minor community concerns on its Steam community hub. However, the stunning new gameplay trailer definitively confirms that the project is thriving, expanding its reach beyond the initially announced PC version to launch on PlayStation 5 within a concrete 2027 release window.

What Is The Lost Wild Gameplay Like?

Forget the heavy firepower associated with traditional action-adventure titles: The Lost Wild is a pure, systemic survival horror game played entirely from a first-person perspective. The overarching gameplay philosophy is built upon three pillars: observation, instinct, and restraint. Players are placed squarely in the middle of a brutal prehistoric food chain where humanity is no longer the apex predator.

The survival loop relies heavily on localized mechanics, including:

  • Evasion and Stealth: Dinosaurs react dynamically to player movement, line of sight, and environmental noise, making careful planning and stealth your primary means of survival.
  • Non-Lethal Arsenal: Your defensive options are intentionally limited, focusing on fire, flares, and non-lethal tools meant to temporarily startle, distract, or intimidate encroaching threats.
  • Scavenging and Exploration: Players must brave overgrown, industrial complexes to scavenge for tools, medical supplies, and resources needed to open up new pathways.
  • Flight Over Fight: When intimidation tactics fail to deter a hungry carnivore, turning around and sprinting for immediate cover is often the only viable option.

When Is The Lost Wild Release Date?

Great Ape Games and Annapurna Interactive have officially scheduled The Lost Wild for a global release window in 2027. While a specific day and month have yet to be locked down, the extended development timeline ensures that the team can maximize the visual potential of Unreal Engine 5.

The game can currently be wishlisted by console players via the Official PlayStation Store or added to player libraries on PC via the Steam Store.

Who Is the Main Character in The Lost Wild?

Players experience the nightmare through the eyes of Saskia, an investigative reporter who wakes up on a mysterious, unnamed island following a sudden accident. Suffering from memory fragments, she must navigate the dense vegetation and piece together why the island was abandoned to prehistoric wilderness.

Saskia is not entirely alone during her journey. Throughout the campaign, a mysterious voice belonging to a man named Daisuke speaks to her over an old radio frequency, guiding her through the island’s facilities and offering a glimmer of hope for an eventual escape.

How Does the AI Make Dinosaurs Behave Like Real Animals?

The core design choice distinguishing The Lost Wild from other creature-driven horror games is that its dinosaurs are modeled after wild animals rather than cinematic movie monsters. Great Ape Games closely analyzed modern apex predators to construct complex, emergent behavioral systems.

The prehistoric reptiles do not follow rigid, predictable patrolling paths. Instead, they exhibit complex internal drives, territorial instincts, curiosity, and fear. An Allosaurus might stalk you out of sheer curiosity before deciding whether you are worth the energy to hunt, while smaller pack-hunters might look to ambush you only when they outnumber you in an enclosed space. This shift from scripted jumpscares to emergent, systemic behavior creates a psychological unease, leaving players constantly guessing whether the creature outside their hiding spot will attack or simply wander away.
