Lined up early for the passes (Thor: Ragnarok sticker) on Friday. Then lined up again on Saturday for my brother’s pass. They handed out a total of 1000 passes for the famed Hall M on Sunday, August 27.
On Sunday, we stuck the sticker passes on our shirt and entered F5 where we were made to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and turn over all our gadgets. Any type of recording was not allowed for the whole duration of the showcase. Then we queued with other Marvel fans in waiting for 12nn. CB Cebulski came by and took a video of all the fans waving in anticipation.
When we finally entered F4, the security was still looking around if any gadget passed through. Cebulski took the stage and presented shorts, trailers and interviews that we at Otaku Asia will now share with you. Sharing was encouraged and it was like Marvel Asia brought in everything they showed in SDCC.
Next week is the Emmy’s and the animated short, Marvel’s Rocket and Groot “Space Walk” by Marvel Animation and Passion Animation Studios. The short was about the duo dancing around in space. The clip is open to view at the Disney XD App.
Another clip was the fight between Sandgirl (Susie, Sandman’s daughter) and Spider-Man in the new Spider-Man cartoon under Disney XD. The fight ended up with the revival of his Black Suit. Cebulski added that if black suit is back, then “a certain villain might also appear”.
Guardians of the Galaxy became a hit in the cinemas (almost unexpectedly) which now led a game. A game?? YES. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is an upcoming game from Telltale Games (did you figure that out)? Within the series, the player primarily plays as Star-Lord, but may at times briefly take the role of another Guardian during action sequences.
Tomoaki Ayano and Kansuke Sakurai’s Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite was teased. This is the most awaited game since their last release 6 years ago. The preview showed heavily on the Ultron Sigma alliance (or merger?) but also hinted at the new addition of the Infinity Stones as a gameplay mechanic.
Meanwhile, you can chillax while waiting for the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2. It showed a villain, who looked like Kang the Conqueror, which by his presence alone opens up a wide range of cosmic possibilities: time-travel, time-slips, colliding universes and Chronopolis.
Insomnia Games is proud to present Marvel’s Spider-Man. There were two clips to enjoy: creator’s talk (Bryan Intihar, creative director) where they explained just how much love and details went into the conceptualization: In the game Peter Parker is 23 years old and is pretty much used to his powers (he started at age 15 and is 28 in the 616 Marvel Universe). The game gives the player awareness of their surroundings and what Spider-Man can utilize at any given time. The second clip was a lengthy gameplay where we follow Spider-Man saving Wilson Fisk’s men from Mister Negative’s Inner Demons. More reasons to get a PS4.
Marvel Powers United VR is a work with Oculus and Marvel where player can take on the challenge to be Rocket, Groot, Capain Marvel, Deadpool or The Incredile Hulk. Though team play rely on friends with an Oculus of their own, this game will not stop you from playing and becoming the superhero you always wanted to be. Lockjaw is a scary character. Why dog?
The last shot of the Powers United VR was Lockjaw running towards the player and Cebulski takes it as a cue to talk about the next part, TV.
Marvel Inhumans is an eight-episode drama following the race of super humans with diverse and singularly unique powers. We watched some Medusa (Serinda Swan) hair action against Maximus (Iwan Rheon), the series’ antagonist. Not much was shown except a small but amazing fight sequence by Gorgon (Eme Ikwuakor) and Karnak (Ken Leung) against Maximus’ men.
Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as The Punisher at Netflix (do every character get their own series?). While there was a sweet musical flashback of Frank with his daughter, there was also a scene of him running over a biker, killing someone with a sniper rifle, and choking a man in a NYC bathroom, while he pleads for his life. So hardcore.
There was a clip of Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Iron Fist) during their first meeting in a alley with a fist fight. When we say fist fight, we meant an Iron Fist fight. The crowd went wild!!
Quite frankly, this was what I came for. Animation, gaming, television are all good but I’m personally a film fan watching some of the movies more than twice in the cinemas (in short, my SM E-pass card is well used).
First off was the Black Panther trailer last previewed back in June. Here is a link to the trailer so we don’t talk about it any more.
Next was a never-before seen clip from the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok movie. Chris Hemsworth as Thor is strapped on a chair going through a what seemed like an amusement park virtual tunnel welcoming him to the planet Sakaar. Afterwards, he is presented to the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) who is between Topaz and Valkyrie played by Rachel House and Tessa Thompson respectively. We love that the clip was very long even showing the new motion-captured character, Korg (Taika Waititi, director).
Although the most awaited movie, Captain Marvel is not yet filming, Cebulski and Marvel Asia worked hard to get something released: the final look for Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel suit. Played by Brie Larson, the superhero is modeled after her most recent comic book runs with short hair and a form-fitting suit. The colors, red, blue and gold will be shining as she fights against the Skulls.
Finally, Cebulski challenged the Hall M attendees to name all the MCU movies released to date. In the end, it was Paul Rudd and Michael Pena who broke it down to an easy summary finally revealing that Michelle Pfeiffer is joining the cast as Janet Van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp in the new movie, Ant Man and the Wasp. The role was previously portrayed by Hayley Lovitt.
There was nothing about Infinity War which I was looking forward to since they showed it back in D23 and SDCC but we guess they are not yet ready to release it to us.
Hall M tl;dr
- Rocket and Groot short is nominated in the Emmy’s
- This is the year of Spiderman with an animated cartoon and PS4 game (if you missed Homecoming, go watch it with me)
- Inhumans will no longer be part of the Marvel movie list as they have announced an 8-episode series under ABC. Karnak best character #bias
- Look at Marvel x Oculus game, Powers United VR to also see Captain Marvel’s suit design. She will be introducing the Skulls in the MCU
- Netflix wants you to subscribe badly that they make a show out of ALL their superheroes
- Korg will be funny in Thor: Ragnarok
As CB Cebulski said, Hall M also stands for Manila so let us all support Marvel animation, games, television and movies that is coming up soon. We hope that next year, they have Marvel actor guests for the panel alongside Cebulski.
